Doctor Who: Christmas of the Daleks

1 INT. TARDIS

The song "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday", by Wizzard
can be heard in the background.

THE DOCTOR, AMY AND RORY are standing in the TARDIS console
room chatting while The Doctor fiddles with the TARDIS' controls.  He is
also wearing a Santa Claus hat.

AMY

You really love Christmas don't you, Doctor?

THE DOCTOR

(singing)

It's the most wonderful time of the year.

RORY

Is it Christmas already?

THE DOCTOR

This is a time machine.  It's Christmas whenever we want!

Amy and Rory smile.

AMY

If everyday was Christmas...Christmas wouldn't be so special
after all.

Rory thinks for a moment.

RORY

Doctor...do Time Lords celebrate Christmas?

THE DOCTOR

Well...we had a similar holiday...but it all got rather
confusing after we perfected time travel.

Amy gives Rory a look...don't ask those questions.

RORY

So is Christmas still celebrated in the far off future?

The Doctor responds rather sarcastically:

THE DOCTOR

Is Christmas still celebrated in the future?  Is
Christmas still celebrated in the future?

The Doctor starts running around the TARDIS console, throwing
levers and working the controls.  The TARDIS heart starts pumping up and
down in its column.

THE DOCTOR

Let me show you Christmas in the year one million AD.

The TARDIS starts to shake.  Everyone grabs onto the
guard rails.

AMY

What's happening?

THE DOCTOR

It's probably just some temporal disturbance.  Relax!
 Enjoy the ride.

The TARDIS heart stops pumping.

THE DOCTOR

Let's go check out Christmas!

Excitedly, the Doctor rushes to the doors.

Amy and Rory smile at each other and follow him.

CUT TO:

2 EXT. ALIEN
STREET - DAY

We see The Doctor, Amy and Rory walking on a street
reminiscent of the sci-fi art of the 1950's. An ALIEN comes nearby.

THE DOCTOR

Excuse me sir, but where are we exactly?

ALIEN

Sixth Avenue.

THE DOCTOR

Ahh...I meant the planet. What planet are we on?

The Alien gives the Doctor a strange look.

ALIEN

Planet forty seven B.

THE DOCTOR

Forty seven B...whoa...we're way out in Orion's belt.

The Doctor looks around and the camera follows his line of
sight:

The street is crowded with everyone wearing similar uniforms
to the alien they just met.  The uniforms are simple yellow coveralls.
There are no signs of Christmas anywhere.

THE DOCTOR

What day is it, by the Human Julian calendar?

ALIEN

December twenty fifth, year one million AD.

THE DOCTOR

What's wrong?  Why is everyone so dull and unhappy?
 It's Christmas.

ALIEN

What is Christmas?

AMY

You're joking, right?  What's Christmas?

Rory just looks stunned.

ALIEN

What's a joke?

rory

It makes you laugh...

amy

Don't you laugh? Christmas is a time of laughter...of
joy...of hope...

alien

What is laughter? Joy?

RORY

There really is no hope for you, is there?

alien

What is hope?

amy

You know...hope...it's the feeling you get at
Christmas...that things will get better...that everyone can be happy...

alien

Things won't get better. No one is happy.

rory

This is getting depressing.

Amy and Rory look to the Doctor.

AMY

Well Doctor...I think you were wrong about Christmas.

THE DOCTOR

No...this can't be right. Something's wrong.

The Doctor looks up at one of the skyscrapers.

the doctor's pov

On the skyscraper is a large red banner. In the center,
in a white circle, the front of a Dalek eye stalk.

back to scene

The Doctor looks around, then motions to Amy and Rory.

THE DOCTOR

Run!

The Doctor, Amy and Rory duck into a quiet alleyway as 3 red
drone Daleks (Power Ranger Daleks) fly by.

THE DOCTOR

We have to get back to the TARDIS now.

The group runs off to the TARDIS.

The Doctor opens the door, ushers them inside, looks around
and then enters himself.

Cut to:

3 INT. TARDIS

They run up to the console and The Doctor starts playing with
the controls.

AMY

Doctor, what's happening?

THE DOCTOR

Somehow the Daleks rewrote time.

amy

How could the Daleks do that?

THE DOCTOR

I don't know but I think that temporal turbulence we
encountered earlier may have something to do with it.

The Doctor presses some switches and the TARDIS heart begins
pumping.

cut to:

4 ext. space

The TARDIS materializes in outer space and spins
along. Further ahead we see a giant crack.

cut to:

5 int. tardis

The Doctor runs to the TARDIS doors and opens them.  Amy
and Rory run to his side.

The camera looks from behind them to the giant crack in space.

They all look puzzled.

AMY

It's another crack.

RORY

I thought we fixed that problem already.

THE DOCTOR

We did.  This is different.

AMY

But it's the same crack.

The camera focuses on their faces again.

THE DOCTOR

Same symptom, different problem.

The Doctor takes out a pair of 3D glasses (the kind the Tenth
Doctor used), puts them on and examines the crack, and then removes them.

THE DOCTOR

Let's get closer.

The Doctor runs to the console and starts working the
controls.

The TARDIS heart starts pumping.

The camera shows the view from Amy's eyes from behind her and
Rory, and we see them approaching the crack.

Cut to:

6 EXT. SPACE

The TARDIS floats towards the crack without it's usual
spinning.

Cut to:

7 INT. TARDIS

The TARDIS starts trembling like a plane encountering
turbulence.  As the crack gets closer, the turbulence increases.

THE DOCTOR

I'm stopping her before we get too close.

The Doctor pulls a lever.

The TARDIS stops.

The glow of the crack can now be felt inside the TARDIS.
An unnerving crackling noise can be heard.

AMY

Doctor should we be so close?  What if the crack touches
us?

THE DOCTOR

Not this time.  The shields should protect us.

RORY

Not this time?  There was a time we came into contact
with a crack?

THE DOCTOR

Yes...but that's not important now.

RORY

But...

AMY

I'll explain later...

Amy kisses Rory.

Lightning erupts from the crack and hits the TARDIS shields,
causing a purple glow at the point where the bolt struck the invisible bubble
around the TARDIS.

Amy and Rory leap back in fear.

AMY

What was that?

The Doctor runs to the TARDIS doorway and looks outside.

THE DOCTOR

Some type of temporal debris...it's as if time itself is
collapsing.

RORY

How can time collapse?

THE DOCTOR

A crude but inaccurate analogy would be if someone cut out a
piece of a racecar engine before a race.  Not a big piece...but an
important one.  The car isn't affected at the start, but later on in the
race, things start to fall apart.

The Doctor reaches above and pulls down a device that
resembles a dentist's x-ray (the kind used to take photos of seated patients).

Rory thinks for a beat.

RORY

So somebody cut out a piece of time?  How?

THE DOCTOR

Someone changed the past.  Given our recent encounter,
I'm guessing it's the Daleks.

AMY

Then why aren't we stuck in the same point in time?
 Like last time?

The Doctor examines the crack with his x-ray.

THE DOCTOR

That's what I'm trying to figure out.

The Doctor pushes his x-ray back into position above the
doorway.

THE DOCTOR

Ok...this crack was artificially opened to a specific point
in time and space.  The Daleks surrounded it with a null field to prevent
reality from collapsing.

The Doctor closes the TARDIS doors and the group goes to the
control console.

The Doctor points out a handle.

THE DOCTOR

Rory, pull that handle.

Rory pulls the handle and the TARDIS starts rumbling.

RORY

What did I just do?

THE DOCTOR

You released the TARDIS brakes.

AMY

Why did you want that?

THE DOCTOR

So we will be pulled to the source of the crack.

AMY

How?

THE DOCTOR

The crack is like a sink hole, sucking all of time in.
We let our anchor go, the huon particles in the crack will attract the
huon particles in the TARDIS.

AMY

Why don't we just rematerialize at the source?

THE DOCTOR

At this point in time and space the time vortex is too
unstable.  If the TARDIS attempts to enter the time vortex now, we may end
up erased from existence.

RORY

Why is the TARDIS shaking?

THE DOCTOR

She's scared.

AMY

Scared?  What could possibly scare the TARDIS?  She
practically ate House...that living planet...what out there could possibly
scare her?

THE DOCTOR

Daleks.

Cut to:

8 EXT. SPACE

The TARDIS has stopped in front of a Dalek saucer.  On
top of the saucer is an antennae from which the crack emanates from.

Cut to;

9 INT. TARDIS

AMY

You knew the Daleks were here?!  You took us straight to
them!

RORY

What if they capture us?

THE DOCTOR

Well yeah, they could get in if they wanted to, but they
don't want to.  Why they don't want to?  Because the only way to
disable a TARDIS is to use a temporal disruption, and any such disruption so
near a crack like this runs the risk of evaporating half of this universe...not
to mention the collateral damage inflicted to other dimensions...

RORY

What?

THE DOCTOR

They're so focused on the crack they don't have time for us.

The Doctor walks over to the TARDIS console and flips some
switches.

AMY

Don't the Daleks know we're here?

THE DOCTOR

Oh...I'm sure they're very aware of our presence now.

RORY

Why don't they just shoot us down?

THE DOCTOR

This close to the crack?  They run the risk of making
the crack more unstable than it already is.

AMY

What are they going to do then?

THE DOCTOR

Talk to us.

AMY

No one's called.

THE DOCTOR

Too much interference out there.  They're going to want
a more personal channel.

The Doctor presses a button.

The front TARDIS doors transform into a steel air lock door.

AMY

What did you just do?

THE DOCTOR

I changed the interior layout of the TARDIS...

AMY

Why?

The Doctor goes through the steel air lock door, followed by
Amy and Rory.

cut to:

10 INT.
TARDIS

They stand on a train platform. In front of them, a
roller coaster. The Doctor sits in the front car, and Amy and Rory sit
beside him.

amy

So you changed the layout so you could go on a roller coaster
ride?

The Doctor presses a button and the roller coaster speeds off.

rory

Ahh!!!

THE DOCTOR

No...I changed the internal configuration to make it harder
for the Daleks to reach the control room if they broke in!

cut to:

11 INT.
TARDIS

The Doctor, Amy and Rory enter a lobby/waiting area where the
double police box doors can be seen. The Doctor walks to a nearby console,
presses some buttons, and proceeds to open the doors, with Amy and Rory behind
him.

THE DOCTOR

Now just be calm...nothing should be able to get in.

Cut to:

12 EXT.
SPACE

the doctor's pov

To the right, the crack, which we can clearly see is much
bigger than the TARDIS.  Bolts of purple energy explode from the crack.

In front, a Dalek saucer.

AMY

What's that?

THE DOCTOR

A Dalek ship.

AMY

What are we doing?

THE DOCTOR

Waiting to talk...look!

The Doctor points out a tiny dot in the distance, leaving the
Dalek saucer.  As it approaches, we see it is a blue DALEK STRATEGIST.

The Dalek Strategist stops within speaking distance of the
TARDIS.

Cut to:

13 INT.
TARDIS

THE DOCTOR

Oy!

Cut to:

14 EXT.
SPACE

Dalek strategist

You are the Doctor.

Cut to:

15 INT.
TARDIS

THE DOCTOR

The new and improved Dalek paradigm...and still you can only
state the obvious.

RORY

What does it want?

Cut to:

16 EXT.
SPACE

DALEK STRATEGIST

You will help us advance the Dalek stratagem.

Cut to:

17 INT.
TARDIS

THE DOCTOR

Typical Dalek.  Always begging others for help.

Cut to:

18 EXT.
SPACE

DALEK STRATEGIST

Daleks do not beg from inferior species.

Cut to:

19 INT.
TARDIS

THE DOCTOR

Then stop wasting my precious time.  Oh...and by the
way...my people are not inferior to you.  We were the only species that
destroyed your pathetic kind.  Remember the Last Great Time War?

Cut to:

20 EXT.
SPACE

The Dalek Strategist becomes visibly annoyed.

DALEK STRATEGIST

Millions of Time Lords were captured! We experimented on
them!

Cut to:

21 INT.
TARDIS

The Doctor is visibly emotional.

THE DOCTOR

We used to give Dalek casings to our children to play with!

Amy grabs the Doctor.

AMY

Stop it!  Both of you.  You're like drunk juveniles!

The Doctor looks embarrassed.

Cut to;

22 EXT.
SPACE

The Dalek Strategist's eye stalk dips, as if in shame.

cut to:

23 INT.
TARDIS

amy

Now look...Dalek...you obviously need something from the
Doctor, and Doctor...you need information from the Daleks...so please...talk
like adults.

The Doctor sighs.

THE DOCTOR

Why did you open this crack?

cut to:

24 EXT.
SPACE

DALEK STRATEGIST

We did not. We are trying to close it.

cut to:

25 INT.
TARDIS

THE DOCTOR

How did it open?

cut to:

26 EXT.
SPACE

DALEK STRATEGIST

We cannot confirm. Our sensors cannot penetrate the
temporal radiation.

cut to:

27 INT.
TARDIS

the doctor

Can you at least reduce the fluctuations in chronon radiation
wavelengths?

cut to:

28 EXT.
SPACE

DALEK STRATEGIST

Yes.

cut to:

29 INT.
TARDIS

The Doctor walks over to a nearby console out of the Dalek's
sight, enters in some commands, pulls a lever and walks over to Amy and
Rory. He stands between them and puts his arms around both.

THE DOCTOR

Alright...let us know when you're ready.

cut to:

30 EXT.
SPACE

Several orange Scientist Daleks are hovering around the
crack, holding strange instruments in their sucker arms.

The frequency of the purple bolts exploding from the crack
begins to reduce steadily.

The Dalek Strategist flies back to the TARDIS and talks to
the Doctor.

DALEK STRATEGIST

We are ready.

cut to:

31 INT.
TARDIS

THE DOCTOR

I'll need a Dalek Transolar Disc to get through the crack to
the other side to see what caused it.

cut to:

32 EXT.
SPACE

A transolar disc flies near the TARDIS.

DALEK STRATEGIST

Here is the transportation you require.

cut to:

33 INT.
TARDIS

The Doctor, with his arms still around Rory and Amy, says:

THE DOCTOR

Geronimo!

With that they all jump...

continuous shot:

34 EXT.
SPACE

Onto the transolar disc.

The disc takes them through the crack.

The Dalek Strategist turns to the scientists:

DALEK STRATEGIST

Isolate the TARDIS!

Cut to:

35 EXT.
park
- day

The transolar disc has been parked in a clearing, with the
Doctor, Amy, and Rory standing nearby.

The Doctor takes out his sonic screwdriver and waves it at
the Dalek transolar disc.

AMY

What did you just do?

THE DOCTOR

Just locked the controls and established a perception filter
around it in case we need it later.

AMY

What do we do now?

THE DOCTOR

We find out what the Daleks did that caused the crack to open.

RORY

I thought the Daleks told us they didn't open the crack.

THE DOCTOR

They lied.

AMY

Then why did we leave the TARDIS?!  What if the Daleks
break in?

THE DOCTOR

They'll try...but I'm prepared for that.

RORY

How do we find out why the Daleks opened the crack?

THE DOCTOR

We search for the point where time is most fragile...which
shouldn't be far from here.

The Doctor takes out his sonic screwdriver, extends the
emitter and starts to follow it.

The CAMERA ZOOMS OUT to reveal the Doctor, Amy and Rory are
walking in a park. Further out in front of them are some old Victorian
buildings.

cut to:

36 ext.
marylEbone - day

The Doctor, Amy and Rory stroll onto a busy street.
People are dressed in Victorian era clothing and there are horses and
horse driven carriages in the background.

Paper boy (o.s)

Get your news!  Five pence!

The Doctor turns and walks up to the paper boy.

The Doctor holds up his psychic paper.

THE DOCTOR

I got a special offer from the publisher.

The paper boy checks the psychic paper.

PAPER BOY

Here you go.

The paper boy gives the Doctor a copy of the local newspaper.

the doctor's pov

The date on the newspaper is plainly visible: Friday,
November 17, 1843.

back to scene

The Doctor passes the paper to Amy and Rory, who scan it
together.

amy

So we're in London, in eighteen forty three.

rory

Why did the Daleks come here? And why this point in time?

The Doctor looks thoughtfully around him...

THE DOCTOR

Hmmm...what happens in eighteen forty three in London?

The Doctor starts walking down a street while Amy and Rory
follow.

THE DOCTOR

At least another eight years before the Cybermen
arrive...what else could be here? What could the Daleks possibly be after?

Several children rush by...

THE DOCTOR

Something's wrong here...

amy

What?

THE DOCTOR

It's November seventeenth...why are there no Christmas
decorations about?

the doctor's pov

The Victorian street has no Christmas decor.

back to scene

rory

Maybe Christmas isn't such a big thing yet?

amy

What do you mean? It's eighteen forty three
AD...Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus...and given how strong
the church was in England even now, I'm sure Christmas is a big thing now.

The Doctor suddenly realizes what's going on.

THE DOCTOR

That's it! You're a genius Rory!

RORY

Thank you. Uhh...what for?

THE DOCTOR

Christmas isn't such a big thing yet...

amy

What do you mean?

THE DOCTOR

Up to this point, many people were concerned Christmas was
losing significance as a holiday. Come December seventeenth this year, a
very famous book was published.

RORY

A Christmas Carol?

THE DOCTOR

Exactly! Charles Dickens' book was credited for
revitalizing the spirit of Christmas: family, goodwill...

amy

Hope.

THE DOCTOR

That's how they did it.  The Daleks somehow stopped
Charles Dickens from publishing A Christmas Carol, thus causing Christmas to be
forgotten.

AMY

Without Christmas, the new year looks less promising...

RORY

Christmas is just a holiday...

THE DOCTOR

The most important holiday!  It gives us a reason to be
happy...a reason to live...hope...

RORY

I don't get it.

THE DOCTOR

It's brilliant.  No Christmas spirit, no annual gift
giving, no annual renewal of hope.

RORY

So.

THE DOCTOR

Hope is one of the greatest human traits.  Hope carried
Winston through the Battle of Britain.

AMY

And hope will help humanity resist the Daleks.

THE DOCTOR

Exactly.  No Christmas, no hope..the Daleks conquer
everything.  This is the most ingenious, evil, heinious plan the Daleks
have ever hatched.

RORY

Doctor, what do we have to do now?

THE DOCTOR

We have to save Christmas.

cut to:

37 EXT.
SPACE

4 orange scientist Daleks surround the TARDIS. In their
sucker arms are strange instruments. The instruments start making
crackling noises:

A ring of blue light appears around the TARDIS. It
flickers on and off like a light bulb burning out.

Finally the light disappears.

cut to:

38 EXT.

The camera ZOOMS IN on a sign nailed to the wall outside the
gate: Devonshire Terrace.

Cut to:

39 EXT.

There is too much temporal interference from the crack.

DALEK SCIENTIST 2

We cannot establish a temporal prison around the TARDIS with
so much temporal instability from the crack.

The Doctor stops a RESIDENT.

THE DOCTOR

Hello...I'm looking for an old brown house...

Resident

Over there.

The resident points out the flat.

The Doctor, Amy and Rory walk over.

The camera PANS OUT from behind The Doctor, Amy and Rory and
shows them looking up at a Victorian home.

Cut to:

3 blue Dalek Strategists, an orange Dalek Scientist and a
white DALEK SUPREME are holding a meeting.

Dalek scientist

We cannot trap the TARDIS.

DALEK STRATEGIST 1

It is irrelevant.  The Doctor must assist us if he
wishes to return to his TARDIS.

DALEK STRATEGIST 2

The Doctor will attempt to thwart our strategem.

DALEK STRATEGIST 3

Our squad will be able to stop him. We will force him to
seal the crack or his companions will be exterminated.

DALEK SCIENTIST

Once the crack is sealed we should be able to imprison the
TARDIS in a time loop.

DALEK supreme

Continue with the current strategem. We will be
victorious. Daleks are supreme.

daleks (chorus)

Daleks are supreme. Daleks are supreme.

cut to:

The Doctor knocks on the door.  He looks very excited.
Amy and Rory don't understand and just stare at each other in
bewilderment.

The door opens.

The camera shows us the point of view from behind the Doctor,
Amy and Rory:

CHARLES DICKENS.

Charles dickens pov

The Doctor holds out his psychic paper so Charles Dickens
sees the blank paper in front of his eyes.

THE DOCTOR

Mr. Dickens?  How do you do?  I'm the Doctor.
And this is Amy and Rory.  We're with Chapman and Hall publishing.

The camera POV is from behind The Doctor, Amy and Rory:

Charles dickens

Ahhh!!!!

Charles Dickens slams the door on them.

Back to scene

The Doctor, Amy and Rory look at each other in shock.
 Why?

The Doctor starts banging on the door.

THE DOCTOR

Mr. Dickens, is everything all right in there?

CHARLES DICKENS (o.s.)

Please don't hurt me!

rory

Why would we want to hurt you?

CHARLES DICKENS (O.S.)

I'm not finished yet.

AMY

Finished what?

CHARLES DICKENS (O.S.)

My book!

THE DOCTOR

Charles...if you open the door I promise we'll help you
finish the story.

CHARLES DICKENS (O.S.)

Promise?

THE DOCTOR

Yes.

The door opens.

Charles Dickens stands before them.

THE DOCTOR

So, may we come in for tea?

Cut to:

43 Int.
dickens' flat - day

The Doctor, Amy and Rory are having tea with the Dickens'
family: AUNT GEORGINA (Charles' sister-in-law), CATHERINE DICKENS (Charles'
wife), and their ten children, C.C.B. DICKENS, MARY DICKENS, KATE DICKENS,
WALTER DICKENS, FRANCIS DICKENS, ALFRED DICKENS, SYDNEY DICKENS, HENRY DICKENS,
DORA DICKENS, and EDWARD DICKENS.

They are seated in the living room sipping tea, enjoying
scones and sandwiches, and laughing.

THE DOCTOR

And that was my best Christmas ever.

CHARLES DICKENS

You make me remember what Christmas used to be like.

Suddenly The Doctor's sonic screwdriver starts beeping.

AMY

What's that?

THE DOCTOR

That's bad news. That's very extremely bad news.

catherine dickens

How bad?

THE DOCTOR

Very very extremely extremely not good.

RORY

What do we do?

THE DOCTOR

We have to get out of here now!

cut to:

44 EXT.
DICKENS' FLAT - DAY

The Doctor, Amy, Rory and the Dickens' clan are having a
quick tactical discussion outside their home.

THE DOCTOR

Amy, Rory, you take the Dickens' family to The Tower of
London. They should be safe there. Just tell them the Doctor sent you.

AMY

What about you two?

THE DOCTOR

The Daleks want us. They'll ignore you and come after us.

RORY

Doctor...what if the Daleks try to catch us? They know
you'd come and try to save us, right?

THE DOCTOR

Maybe.

Rory and Amy look annoyed.

THE DOCTOR

Don't worry...there's not that many of them and they don't
want to get noticed. Besides which, we'll make sure the Daleks are going
to pursue us.

CHARLES DICKENS

What?!?

THE DOCTOR

Come on!

The Doctor and Charles Dickens run away while the others
watch concerned.

Cut to:

45 EXT.
MARYLEBONE - DAY

Amy, Rory and the Dickens' family are riding a horse buggy.

RORY

Why is it taking so long?  We're in London already!

AMY

another twenty years.

Cut to:

46 EXT.
MARYLEBONE - DAY

The Doctor and Charles Dickens are running down a street,
pursued by a red DALEK DRONE.

Dalek drone

Exterminate!

The Dalek Drone fires a bolt of energy.

FX/PRAC: An explosion behind Charles Dickens throws dirt into
the air.

A sizzling crack in time and space opens behind them.

Meanwhile the Doctor is desperately waving his sonic
screwdriver at his TARDIS key.

CHARLES DICKENS

Stop playing with your toys!  That monster is trying to
kill us!

THE DOCTOR

I'm not playing...I'm extrapolating the perception filter of
my TARDIS around us!

CHARLES DICKENS

What?!?

THE DOCTOR

Making sure the Dalek doesn't get a clear sight of us!

The Doctor looks to his left, grabs Charles Dickens and pulls
him into a side alley.

They hide quietly and the Dalek flies by.

THE DOCTOR

That was close.

CHARLES DICKENS

Doctor, why are the Daleks after me?

The Doctor looks back around the corner and for the first
time notices the new crack.

The Doctor puts his arm around Charles Dickens' shoulder and
leads him to the crack.

THE DOCTOR

Come along, Charles...let me show you something.

The Doctor and Charles Dickens stand in front of the crack.

CHARLES DICKENS

What's that?

The Doctor waves his sonic screwdriver at the crack.

THE DOCTOR

It's a crack in the skin of reality.  Now please...

The Doctor puts his hands on Charles Dickens' temples.

CHARLES DICKENS

Doctor, what are you doing?

THE DOCTOR

Relax Charles...I'm tuning your mind to be sensitive to the
crack...Just think back to your childhood...

As Charles Dickens relaxes, The Doctor gently turns him
towards the crack, and carefully guides him close so he can see into the crack.

The Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to open the crack
further.

The camera ZOOMS IN on Charles Dickens' face:

Charles Dickens' eyes open wide in awe.

charles dickens' pov:

Inside the crack we see a young Charles Dickens enjoying
Christmas festivities with his family. He is laughing and clearly having a
great time.

BACK TO SCENE

THE DOCTOR

That is what Christmas should be.

CHARLES DICKENS

Thank you Doctor.

The crack snaps shut and disappears.

CHARLES DICKENS

What happened?

THE DOCTOR

Oohh...I just opened the crack all the way and tuned your
thoughts so you could see your past...but the forces reverted and the crack
snapped itself shut.

The Doctor and Charles Dickens carefully make their way
through the dark streets, hoping to avoid the Daleks.

CHARLES DICKENS

Doctor, these Daleks, they have magical abilities...they can

THE DOCTOR

Relax Charles! The Daleks only look threatening on the
outside...deep down they are weaker and more afraid than you and I.

CHARLES DICKENS

But they are still more capable than us. How can we
fight them?

THE DOCTOR

Don't worry...Amy's going to get an old friend of mine to
work on that. Right now we got to locate the Daleks' base of operations
here.

They are then led into a meeting room lit by several torches.

Inside, sitting at a table, dressed in period clothing, is
CAPTAIN JACK.

Amy immediately notices Captain Jack, which Rory notices
jealously.

Jack notices both Rory and Amy and smiles flirtatiously.

Captain Jack

Captain Jack Harkness.  And who are you?

Amy blushes.

AMY

Amy.  And Rory.

RORY

Her husband.

CAPTAIN JACK

What brings you here?

AMY

The Doctor told us to bring the Dickens here for safe keeping.

CAPTAIN JACK

Safe keeping?  From what?

RORY

Daleks.

Cut to:

51 Ext.

The Doctor and Charles Dickens are following the sonic
screwdriver's beeping.

The beeping increases in frequency.

CHARLES DICKENS

What does that mean?

THE DOCTOR

It means they're close.

The Doctor pulls Charles Dickens into the bushes to hide.

THE DOCTOR

Keep quiet.  Stay low.  Keep your eyes open.

CHARLES DICKENS

Where should I be looking?  There's nothing here.

THE DOCTOR

Where you never want to look.  The corner of your eye.

The camera ZOOMS IN on the side of Charles Dickens face as he
looks out the corner of his eye.

Charles dickens POV

We see a crack generated by a Dalek device, guarded by 3
drone Daleks.

BACK TO SCENE

Charles Dickens tugs at the Doctor.

CHARLES DICKENS

Doctor...look.

Charles Dickens directs the Doctor to the Dalek base camp.

The camera ZOOMS IN on the Doctor's face as his eyes open
wide in shock.

CHARLES DICKENS

How come we never noticed it? It was right in front of
us!

THE DOCTOR

Perception filter.

CHARLES DICKENS

Like what we got?

THE DOCTOR

Yes.

CHARLES DICKENS

But we saw through theirs...why can't they see through ours?

THE DOCTOR

They're focused on their own problems now. But they
spotted us already so sooner or later they'll figure it out and adjust their
sensors to see through our perception filter.

charles dickens pov

We see several people strolling through the park, looking
very non-chalant.

CHARLES DICKENS

Doctor, look at everyone. So...

THE DOCTOR

Ahh...no Christmas spirit. Not like what you used to
have.

CHARLES DICKENS

Alas no. Christmas spirit has disappeared...such is
Christmas today.

THE DOCTOR

You can change that, you know?

CHARLES DICKENS

How?

Alright, you guys keep the Dickens family here safe.

The Doctor and Charles Dickens sneak closer to the Daleks.

THE DOCTOR

I have to get to their chronon vault.

CHARLES DICKENS

What?

THE DOCTOR

That device they are using to keep the crack open.

CHARLES DICKENS

Why?

THE DOCTOR

The crack was opened so they could rewrite history.  But
they're trying to change an event that has to happen...and that's the problem.

CHARLES DICKENS

What can we do to stop them?

The Doctor smiles.

THE DOCTOR

That's the spirit Charles!

The Doctor looks about his hiding spot.

The Doctor's POV

Charles...I've got a plan.

reaching critical mass.

Cut to:

55 EXT.
LONDON, HYDE PARK - NIGHT

Captain Jack, Amy and Rory look about the park, confused.

RORY

Why are we here?

CAPTAIN JACK

My vortex manipulator starts working better the closer it is
to temporal anomalies.  And since it's humming really peachy now, we've
got to be close to the Daleks' time corridor.

AMY

Then the Doctor should be nearby.

RORY

Then where is he?

Cut to:

56 EXT.
LONDON, HYDE PARK - NIGHT

The Doctor crawls stealthily ever so closer to the Dalek
chronon vault.

Dalek drone 1

Doctor, cease your deception.  We have detected your
perception filter.

(Still facing the other Daleks)

The Doctor stands up and brushes himself off.

THE DOCTOR

Right...it was getting rather embarrassing anyway.

The camera CUTS TO Charles Dickens hiding in the bushes.

THE DOCTOR

Tell me...how long have you known?

Dalek Drone 1 turns to face the Doctor.

DALEK DRONE 1

Since you came out of hiding in the bushes.

THE DOCTOR

Why did you play along for so long?

DALEK DRONE 1

To determine if you were in secret communication with your
companions.  To determine if Charles Dickens is with you.

The camera ZOOMS IN on Charles Dickens who is hiding in the
nearby bushes and watching. He looks shocked: why do they want him?

THE DOCTOR

Of course...you really have to learn to stop telling your
enemies all these details.

DALEK DRONE 1

Do not mock the Daleks!

The Doctor sighs.

DALEK DRONE 1

You will seal this crack for us!

THE DOCTOR

Fine...I'll help.

The Doctor takes out his sonic screwdriver and points it at
the chronon vault. He extends the emitter and the sonic screwdriver starts
making a high pitched noise.

The camera ZOOMS IN on Captain Jack's face. He looks
shocked.

DALEK DRONE 1

Stop this treachery!

F/X: A DEFABRICATOR laser beam strikes Dalek Drone 1 but the
energy is harmlessly absorbed by the Dalek.

CAPTAIN JACK

AMY

What should we do?

CAPTAIN JACK

Run!

Amy, Captain Jack and Rory start running as 2 Dalek drones
fly off to pursue them.

The last Dalek drone spins to face the Doctor, gun stalk
raised.

DALEK DRONE 1

You will still assist!

The Doctor turns his attention to the chronon vault and
starts waving his sonic screwdriver at it.

The camera ZOOMS IN on Charles Dickens, who suddenly rushes
out of the bushes.

Charles Dickens darts in front of the Doctor.

CHARLES DICKENS

Stop! Please! Let them go! It's me you want.

THE DOCTOR

No Charles! You mustn't!

The Doctor gets between the Dalek and Charles Dickens.

DALEK DRONE 1

You are Charles Dickens! You will be exterminated!

THE DOCTOR

THE DOCTOR

It's a long story! Let's just get out of here.

The Doctor, Amy, Rory, Captain Jack, Charles Dickens and the
boy all breathe heavily in relief.

AMY

How did the TARDIS get here?

THE DOCTOR

If the TARDIS becomes separated from its crew, by default it
lands on the nearest planetary mass.

RORY

Why didn't it land on that other planet the minute we hopped
that crack?

THE DOCTOR

The interference from the crack held it in place.  When
I stabilized it, my TARDIS locked onto me on the other side of the crack and
came through.

CHARLES DICKENS

Doctor, those things, those Daleks...why do they want to kill
me?

THE DOCTOR

Because you are about to finish one of the most famous novels
ever written: A Christmas Carol.

CHARLES DICKENS

What?

Boy

What's Christmas?

Rory goes to the boy and checks him over.

RORY

Doctor...I think he still has a mild concussion...I'm taking
him to medical.

Rory takes the boy and leaves.

CAPTAIN JACK

So what do you want to do now?

(Captain Jack says flirtatiously to Amy)

Amy is both flattered and stunned by his directness.

THE DOCTOR

Don't even start.  That was more than just a hello.

CAPTAIN JACK

I was only trying to be warm and friendly.

CHARLES DICKENS

What is this novel...A Christmas Carol?

CAPTAIN JACK

This isn't looking so good now.

AMY

How can you not even know the title of your own book?

Charles Dickens looks embarassed.

CHARLES DICKENS

I haven't started yet.

THE DOCTOR

That's alright Charles.  You've got a bad case of
writer's block, that's all.

CHARLES DICKENS

But I need to finish it, or I won't be able to support my
family!

THE DOCTOR

I think we can help with that.

CHARLES DICKENS

THE DOCTOR

It's Christmas now.

CHARLES DICKENS

The Daleks won't even let them celebrate Christmas?

THE DOCTOR

They don't even know about Christmas. Christmas has not
existed for a million years for this timeline.

CHARLES DICKENS

What happened?

THE DOCTOR

The Daleks tried to change history...by killing you before
you complete your upcoming novel.

CHARLES DICKENS

My novel? I haven't even started it yet!

THE DOCTOR

Now that's a big problem. We don't have much time.
No wonder why the crack has not sealed itself up.

The Doctor looks thoughtfully for a moment.

THE DOCTOR

Think about everything you just saw...and start writing.
Think about the Christmases of the past, the current, and of down below.

CAPTAIN JACK (O.S)

CAPTAIN JACK

How romantic! Now let's do something useful while we're
at this.

Captain Jack aims his DEFABRICATOR at the crack generating
antennae on the roof of the Dalek saucer.

F/X: The energy beam strikes the dish antennae, causing it to
explode. The crack starts to close.

CAPTAIN JACK

Hurry Doctor, now!

Cut to:

TARDIS, CONSOLE ROOM

The Doctor is still working the TARDIS controls as sparks

The 3 red drone Daleks gather around the chronon vault,
lights flashing and twitching like a trio of agitated cockroaches.

DALEK DRONE 1

Emergency!  Temporal field destabilizing!

F/X: Suddenly a sizzling crack opens above the vault.
Bolts of energy burst out and illuminate the Daleks' invisible shields.

The TARDIS spins out of the crack and bowls the 3 Daleks out
of the way like a bowling ball striking pins down.

DALEK DRONE 1

Ahhh!!!

The TARDIS lands upright on the park, strands of smoke
seeping from it.

The Daleks start to hover.

The TARDIS doors open.

ZOOM IN:

Captain Jack and Rory (still dressed as a Roman centurion),
stand at the doorway, weapons ready, looking calm and cool, like Men in Black.

F/X: Rory and Captain Jack fire away, exploding 2 Daleks
before they can upright themselves.  Dalek parts land all over the park.

The last Dalek uprights itself and flies straight up.

The view of the eyestalk turns to television snow.

Back to scene

The Dalek crashes to the ground in flames.

F/X: Part of the Dalek explodes.  Thick smoke billows
from it.

The Doctor runs out to join Rory and Captain Jack.

THE DOCTOR

Good shooting you two!

RORY

Thanks.

THE DOCTOR

You can remove your centurion costume now...before anyone
notices you.

CAPTAIN JACK

You can take your clothes off now...I'm actually looking
forward to it.

Rory looks uncomfortable.

THE DOCTOR

Jack...behave.

Amy runs out and gives Rory a passionate kiss.

AMY

You're so brave.  I love you.

CAPTAIN JACK

Can I get a kiss too?

The Doctor rolls his eyes.

AMY

You get a hug.

Captain Jack and Amy hug.

Charles Dickens bursts onto the scene overjoyed, clutching a
stack of papers in his arms.

CHARLES DICKENS

I did it!  I finished my book!

AMY

And did you name it like we told you too?

CHARLES DICKENS

A Christmas Carol!

CAPTAIN JACK

Brilliant.

THE DOCTOR

I don't say that anymore...that was the old me.

CHARLES DICKENS

What?

CAPTAIN JACK

Never mind.  Let's get you back to your family.

AMY

I know you had writer's block, but how did you write an
entire novel in under an hour?

CHARLES DICKENS

What?!  I spent days in that library!

THE DOCTOR

I put the TARDIS library in a little pocket of time.
That's why he never felt the effects of the Daleks' weapons.

RORY

What about all these Dalek bits lying around Hyde Park?

CAPTAIN JACK

Don't sweat it.  I'll get Torchwood to clean it up.

AMY

Torchwood?

CAPTAIN JACK

Where we first met.  Where the Dickens family is now.

Cut to:

138 INT.
TOWER OF LONDON - NIGHT

The Dickens family, Amy, Rory, Captain Jack and The Doctor
sit around a fire listening to Charles Dickens' narrate A Christmas Carol.

CATHERINE DICKENS

A beautiful story, Charles!  Once people read it,
Christmas will be reborn.

THE DOCTOR

And it'll be out on time for Christmas this year.

CATHERINE DICKENS

There's something you should know.

THE DOCTOR

What?

CATHERINE DICKENS

The publisher's deadline passed a month ago.

THE DOCTOR

AMY

Doctor, what happened?

CAPTAIN JACK

We followed the time stream of the crack back.  We
shouldn't be more than a day off from when we left.

THE DOCTOR

The Daleks severely damaged the TARDIS on our way back.
She probably shifted off course on the way back...cracks aren't the most
accurate way to travel in time.

RORY

But the book was out for Christmas!  We got to get it
out ourselves.

CHARLES DICKENS

What day is it today?

CATHERINE DICKENS

December twenty fourth.

CAPTAIN JACK

Christmas eve?

THE DOCTOR

You celebrate Christmas, Jack?

CAPTAIN JACK

Doesn't everyone?

THE DOCTOR

Right.  Ok...a few hours to publish and distribute A
Christmas Carol...

AMY

We can use the TARDIS.

THE DOCTOR

She was too badly hurt by all the Dalek weaponry.  She
won't be up and running for another week at least.

CAPTAIN JACK

The TARDIS library...is the time pocket still working?

THE DOCTOR

No...the TARDIS has shut down all its systems and is focusing
on regenerating itself.

AMY

Well...what can we do?

THE DOCTOR

Wait...I've got an idea...Charles, Captain, Amy, Rory...come
on!

The Doctor runs out, followed by Charles Dickens, Captain
Jack, Amy and Rory.

mad.

CHARLES DICKENS

How can you do this?

THE DOCTOR

Oh...it's just some microsopic modulation of the...

amy

He can do things you don't understand.

(to Charles Dickens)

It's better we just not let him get into the details.

CAPTAIN JACK

Hello?! How are we going to get six thousand copies of
this book into the hands of Londoners by Christmas? Not to mention we have
to modify the publisher's logs to show these copies were released on December
seventeenth.

CAPTAIN JACK

A Dalek transolar disc!

CHARLES DICKENS

A what?

THE DOCTOR

We're going to deliver copies of these books by flying to
people's homes and dropping them off...

RORY

You mean...like down the chimney?

Amy, Rory, Captain Jack and Charles Dickens smile.

THE DOCTOR

You got a better idea?

CAPTAIN JACK

In that case I think we need to have more appropriate
uniforms.

The goup looks at Captain Jack, who is smiling.

Rory looks at his Roman centurion costume.

rory

What's wrong with this?

Rory is wearing a pair of red elf pants with black boots and
suspenders, along with the matching red hat. He is shirtless.

Charles Dickens walks out wearing his regular
clothes. He is holding a traditional red
Father Christmas costume.

THE DOCTOR

Charles...don't you want to be Father Christmas?

CHARLES DICKENS

No Doctor, that honour belongs to you.

CAPTAIN JACK (O.S)

What do you all think of this?

Captain Jack walks on scene, wearing only a red bikini brief,
black elf boots and a matching red hat. He smiles proudly (as he still is
in good physical shape) and has hands proudly at his hips (standing like he did
in Bad Wolf when he was first defabricated).

THE DOCTOR

Jack! What the hell are you thinking? Children
could still be awake!

AMY

Don't you think these costumes are a little too...sexy?

CAPTAIN JACK

Hey...what did you expect from my wardrobe?

THE DOCTOR

Captain...please find some pants to put on.

The Doctor starts putting on his Father Christmas costume.

A Christmas Carol. Behind them stands Charles Dickens.

THE DOCTOR

Sure you don't want to come along, Charles?

CHARLES DICKENS

I'm sure Doctor. I'm too old for that. But I thank
you for the offer and for everything you've done!

THE DOCTOR

It was an honour.

CHARLES DICKENS

The honour was mine Doctor.

The group boards the transolar disc and waves goodbye to
Charles Dickens, who waves farewell back.

The transolar disc takes flight.

CHARLES DICKENS

Good bye Doctor, and Merry Christmas!
